Baby Diaper Rash
______________________________

On this page you will find tips and natural and homemade remedies for treating your baby diaper rash problem.  Most babies at one time or another will develop a baby diaper rash, from the time they are born to when they are potty trained, and it can be very uncomfortable for you and your baby.  Knowing what can cause and contribute to it can be very helpful in overcoming your diaper rash.

Wipes & Water  You can use simply water and cloth wipes to clean your baby's diaper area.  Traditional disposable baby wipes, found in most stores, are made with chemicals and perfumes that can make baby diaper rash worse.  These additives can be very irritating to your baby's sensative skin. (And these wipes are not biodegradable, adding to our waste problem).  Wiping your baby with simple warm water on a cloth wipe is a more gentle option.
Airing Out  Let your baby's butt have some air time; show off that perfect bottom!  Place a large blanket or sheet on the floor and take off your baby's diaper so that your baby can lay, and play, naked for a while.  If you are worried about pee on your carpet you can place a waterproof barrier under the sheet to catch any pee (old shower curtain, plastic bag - keep all of these away from baby's face!).  If your baby is rolling or crawling you can have your baby wear a large cloth diaper loosely so that air still flows in and out.  Air time alone may clear up the baby diaper rash.

Natural Detergents  Switch to a natural laundry detergent when washing cloth diapers, and run an extra rinse after your wash cycle.  Many popular detergents contain perfumes, dyes, and other chemicals that leave a residue on your diapers.  Your baby's delicate skin then touches this residue, which can cause diaper rash.
Frequent Diaper Changes  Changing your baby often is the best way to prevent diaper rash.  If your baby already has diaper rash, changing them immediately, every time, the diaper gets wet is important to prevent the painful burning and irritation from waste.

Switch Diapers  If you are using disposable diapers, switch to a different brand that doesn't contain perfumes or chlorine, we recommend Seventh Generation Chlorine-Free Diapers & Wipes.  Many moms find that by switchig to cloth diapers, clears up diaper rash immediately!  Cloth diapers wick away moisture from baby's bottom, while allowing for air circulation to decrease the rate of bacteria growth inside the diaper.

Yeast  A yeast infection can easily cause your baby to get diaper rash.  A simple at home diaper rash solution?  Combine one tablespoon of baking soda with one cup of water and wipe on your baby's skin with cloth wipes.  Leave this paste on until the next diaper change.  If problem persists, you can contact your pediatrician to discuss anti-fungal medication.

My Baby First, LLC's Tip For our baby's diaper rash, we use what our mamas and grandmamas used - old fashioned corn starch (find it in the baking aisle of at your grocer's).  We put it into small shakable containers for on-the-go use.  While the only time this was necessary was when our baby had diarrhea, it cleared the problem up very quickly.  And corn starch is edible if any accidentally gets on anything else!  In addition, our baby has sinus problems, but corn starch is heavier than baby powder so does not pose the respiratory irritation that powder does.

Creams & Butt Balms  Keeping the urine & poo off your baby can be challenging, so it may be helpful to use a diaper rash cream or baby butt balm to create a protective layer for your baby's skin.  There are many brands that make creams with natural ingredients that are safe for your baby's skin such as Calendula, Evening Primrose, and Vitamin E.  DO NOT allow the diaper rash creams to touch your cloth diapers as they will interfere with the diapers' ability to absorb, and can lead to leaks.  Instead, place a reusable or disposable cloth diaper liner on top of your open diaper (the liner should touch baby's skin), so as to protect your diaper from the diaper rash creme!
Diet  Your baby's diet can be causing diaper rash.  If you are breastfeeding, keep in mind that if your baby has allergies to the foods you are eating it may be contributing to the problem.  If your baby is formula fed, contact your pediatrician to discuss changing to a different brand.  If your baby is on solid foods, try to track when the rash is worse and consider that the rash may be caused due to a food allergy.  In addition, teething, colds, and other stressful times can lead to diaper rashes.  Remember to comfort your baby, let that bottom be bare at times, and keep baby's bottom dry.  These are all great ways to keep diaper rash at bay!
