My Baby First - In The News

Working from home, more success.
Print-n-Post May 13, 2008
For many women, it is hard to decide if they should go back to work after having a child, or if they should try to figure out a way to make life work while they stay home. For those women who choose to stay home and work while raising their children, finding a job can be a discouraging task. Many overlook their own personal talents, trying, instead to find a job on the computer or selling something. Some will decide to take their own talents and hobbies and make a career out of them; those are the women who find wonderful, long lasting careers. Today, we will meet two such women.

Teri is passionate about all things “green” She recycles, eats organic and is very selective about what products she uses. She enjoys living a life that helps the environment. In choosing this lifestyle, she also chose to use cloth diapers; this was something important to her. After much thought and encouragement from her husband, Teri decided it would be a great idea to open a business to help other moms interested in using cloth diapers or other earth friendly products.

That; is when she opened My Baby First, a company that makes and sells cloth diapers, baby slings, baby clothing, baby feeding items, baby health & safety products and much, much more. Her motto? "Helping moms everywhere put their babies first!"

She worked on her business while bonding with her newborn daughter on maternity leave. She had to go back to work just 3 short months after having her daughter. After a week of being sad and missing her baby, she decided that she needed to focus her energy on promoting her business, in an attempt to stay home with her daughter.

Her first year was what she describes as a major struggle. Her daughter had difficulties sleeping through the night and she was exhausted. Her days began at 5am and between raising her daughter, working full time and working on her home based business, they wouldn’t end until 11pm. The struggle got to Teri and she considered throwing in the towel several times. This is not uncommon; the uncommon part is that she didn’t give up.

According to Teri, the most difficult part of running a home business is finding a good balance between family and business. She said she thought that if she said yes to family and friends, she was saying no to business. On the other hand, if she spent too much time working on business, the house would start to fall apart and she would become stressed out by the dishes and laundry piling up.

When asked what other people think of her products, they had this to say:

"I was very happy with my shopping experience with MyBabyFirst. Teri was quick to answer my emails, and was very helpful in answering all my cloth diaper questions. Shipping was very fast and I am very happy with the products. I will certainly be buying all my diaper products from MyBabyFirst in the future." --Adria, Maine

"MyBabyFirst offers excellent product selection. Customer service was amazing; they were extremely friendly and helpful. The products I ordered arrived quickly and overall it was a smooth shopping experience." --Jessica, North Dakota

I asked Teri what advice she had for other moms, that are thinking about starting their own business and this is what she said:

I have lots of advice for other moms that may be considering starting a business:
1. Make a commitment from the beginning that you will give it your all and stick to it because it won’t happen on its own; it’s going to take effort to be successful.
2. Stay positive, if something doesn’t work keep trying new things
3 Give it time & don’t give up, if you keep trying success will eventually happen but do not expect it to happen overnight, or even during the first year.
4. Its ok to make sacrifices because once you start to see a glimmer of success it is so rewarding that it makes all your hard work worth it in the end.
5. Choose something you are interested in and really enjoy, it’s a lot harder to be successful at something you don’t passionately believe in.
6. Ask for help when you need it!

It appears that Teri has figured out the key to opening her own business, pick something that you love an d stick with it! With her drive and such great family support, it seems clear that My Baby First is a business name that we will all be hearing daily, in the near future!

My Baby First ~ New Diaper Retailer Based in NH
Cloth Diaper News October 27th, 2007

Teri Gauntt recently opened her online store My Baby First based in New Hampshire.  The store’s cloth diaper offerings include DryBees, Just Ducky Baby, Monkey Doodlez, Organic Caboose, Thirsties and Wahmies.  My Baby First also sells other baby items including activity equipment, clothing, diaper cakes, toys and gifts.  Teri’s motivation to open her store stems from recently becoming a mother and venturing into cloth diapering.

“I became a first time mom this past mother’s day and became passionate about cloth diapering after I started using them with my baby.  I also wanted to create a way I can stay at home with my children as they get older.  The most important thing is putting my baby first and I want to help other moms do the same thing.”
