Monthly Tip: Stripping Cloth Diapers
Have your diapers become water repellent? Sometime after a few
uses diapers will develop a build-up and will need to be "stripped".
What causes diaper repelling problems?
1. HE (high efficiency) washing machines that use small amounts of water.
2. Using warm water instead of hot water, hot water is required to properly
sanitze diapers.
3. Adding diapers to the wash that havent been rinsed of the poo.
4. Residual diaper creams & lotions are left on the diapers.
5. Scented oils used in diaper pails and wetbags will stick to the diapers.
6. Using not enough detergent to properly clean the diapers.
7. Using too much detergent will leave a water repellent coating on the diapers.
8. Using soap to clean diapers will eventually build up on the diapers,
detergent is recommended.

Recipe: Homemade baby food tips & hints
Simple ice cube trays work well for freezing baby food
• Do use ice cube trays to freeze puréed foods.
Each cube should be about one ounce. Once frozen, pop out the
cubes, store in a sealed plastic bag, and use within two months.
• Do discard unfinished meals. Bacteria forms quickly.
• Do introduce new foods at the rate of one per week,
so you can pinpoint any allergies.
• Do make sure your child has accepted most vegetables
and fruits before trying any meats.
• Do steam or microwave vegetables and fruits to retain a
s much vitamins and minerals as possible, as opposed to boiling.
• Do use as thinners: water left from steaming, breast milk,
formula, cow's milk, yogurt, broth, or apple juice.
• Do use as thickeners: wheat germ, whole-grain cereal,
cottage cheese, farmer cheese, cooked egg yolks, yogurt,
mashed white or sweet potato.

Monthly Tip: Teething Signs
How do you know when your child is teething?
Babies begin teething between the ages of 3 months and one year old.
Signs include drooling, wakefulness, crankiness, crying, biting, chewing
and tender gums. Other signs may include refusing food and not
wanting to drink milk. There may even be a small rash around the
mouth from saliva caused by extra drooling.
What To Look For In Teething Gums
Teething gums may appear swollen and red. They may have little
white dots on them, or you may see small openings where a tooth
will appear in a few days. When babies teeth, they drool lots and
end up swallowing all the extra saliva, this may cause loose stools.
If your baby has a fever or excessive diarrhea it is likely to be an
entirely different condition and you should always consult your doctor
immediately.

Monthly Tip: When can baby drink water?
You can give cooled, boiled water to a baby from birth. Breastfed babies do not need water as the foremilk, which they receive at the
beginning of every feed, acts as a drink and the hindmilk as food.
Bottle-fed babies do need a drink as formula milk is just a feed and
not a drink. Offer bottle-fed babies water in between feeds,
especially during hot weather.

important. Wet babies can get cold very easily during baby bathtime, a

January Baby Thoughts
Monthly Tip - Plastic baby bottles unsafe

***********************************
Monthly Tip: Plastic baby bottles may
leach a toxic chemical into formula
and breastmilk
Glass baby bottles are safer for your baby!
As a mom you want to use products for your baby that are safe, especially when it
comes to feeding. Research shows that many plastic baby bottles are made with polycarbonate plastic which can be harmful to your baby. Environment California has
found that polycarbonate clear plastic bottles leach bisphenol A (Bisphenol A is a
Developmental, Neural, and Reproductive Toxicant) at levels that has been found to
cause harm in laboratory animals. This includes five of the most popular brands.
As a parent you can do a few simple things to limit your baby's exposure to these
toxic chemicals.
--choose baby bottles that are made from glass or a safer non-polycarbonate
plastic.
--avoid washing plastic dishware with harsh dishwashing soap and hot water,
which may allow chemicals to leach out of the plastic.
"After learning about this at my weekly mommy group all the other moms including myself s
tarted using glass bottles immediately for our babies. The only way to be sure my baby isnt
ingesting toxic chemicals is to use glass bottles, they are inexpensive and its not worth the risk
to me. The glass bottles are very durable!"
